Eduardo de Castro Mello celebrates yet another heritage protection to his father's work

Um dos mais proeminentes membros da e-DAU, e conselheiro da rede, o arquiteto e urbanista Eduardo de Castro Mello, celebrou recentemente a proteção federal pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN) - de uma das mais importantes obras projetadas pelo seu pai, o renomado arquiteto Ícaro de castro Mello (1913-1986), um atleta olímpico brasileiro no salto com vara e grande especialista na arquitetura esportiva em seu país. O Complexo Esportivo Ibirapuera - também conhecido como 'Complexo Desportivo Constâncio Vaz Guimarães' - terá agora tanto uma proteção municipal como federal e não poderá ser demolido de forma leviana, mesmo que apenas em parte, em projeto de privatização pretendido pelo Governo Estadual de São Paulo (Governo João Doria, recentemente descontinuado pelas eleições). A ideia de adicionar novas áreas de esporte, lazer e entretenimento - até um hotel - à atual infraestrutura, dentro de um projeto de modernização financiado por privados, precisará agora ser aprovado pelo IPHAN também. Se a modernidade precisa continuar, deve encontrar formas inteligentes de atualizar e de preservar um importante capítulo de sua história brasileira. One of the most prominent members at e-DAU, and counselor of the network, architect and urbanist Eduardo de Castro Mello, celebrated recently the federal protection by the Institute for the National Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) - of one of the most important works designed by his father, the renowned modernist, architect Ícaro de Castro Mello (1913-1986), a Brazilian olympic pole-jumping athlete and a great specialist in sport architecture in his country. The Sport Complex, located near the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo - also known as the 'Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sport Complex' - will now have both municipal and federal protection and cannot be demolished in a frivolous way, even if only in parts, in a privatization process intended by the State Government of São Paulo (João Doria Government, recently discontinued by the elections). The idea of adding new sport, leisure and entertainment areas - even a hotel - to the existing infrastructure, within a privately financed modernization project, will now have to be approved by IPHAN as well. If modernity is to continue, it must find intelligent ways to upgrade and to preserve an important part of its history. Well done, Castro Mello family members, and especially Eduardo!
